Meet Our Research Team

Jie Jane Cao, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.C. , is Director of Research and Cardiac Imaging for St. Francis Hospital. Nationally renowned as a cardiac imaging specialist and researcher, Dr. Cao has been the Clinical Director of Cardiac CT and MRI at St. Francis Hospital since 2006. She specializes in Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT, and has broader expertise in preventative cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and cardiac imaging. Before joining St. Francis, Dr. Cao served as Director of Preventative Cardiology and Senior Staff Cardiologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, and as a Senior Research Fellow for the National Institutes of Health in its world-renowned cardiac MRI program.

Dr. Cao received her M.D. degree from the Medical College of Fudan University in Shanghai, and completed her Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Vermont. She earned a Master’s Degree in Biology at Smith College in Massachusetts, and an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Cao was a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health prior to coming to St. Francis. She has lectured extensively in both the U.S. and China on cardiac CT and MRI and has published nearly 70 peer-reviewed research papers and articles in the medical literature.

Eddy Barasch, M.D., FACC, FASE , is the Director of Academic Programs, Co-Director of the Echocardiography Lab, and the Director of the Echo Core Lab at St. Francis Hospital. He is also a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Stony Brook University. Dr. Barasch is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, cardiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and CT angiography and is the author of over 100 abstracts, 60 journal articles, and multiple book chapters. Dr. Barasch is often invited to lecture at scientific conferences and is involved in more than 15 research projects.

Gary R. Gecelter, M.D. , FACS, is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Francis and oversees the Hospital’s growing non-cardiac surgical program, which includes advanced technology and minimally-invasive techniques in esophageal, pancreatico-biliary, colon, urological, ear, nose and throat and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Gecelter served as the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System before joining St. Francis in 2008. Dr. Gecelter is a founding member of the Minimally Invasive Fellowship Council and a member of numerous national and international societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is also a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and has been invited to lecture throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia.

Madhavi Kadiyala, M.D. , is the Assistant Director of the Women’s Heart Program and the Assistant Clinical Director of Cardiac CT & MRI. She also serves as a staff member of the echocardiography laboratory at St. Francis Hospital. Alan S. Katz, M.D. , F.A.C.C., is the Director of Cardiac Imaging and Informatics at St. Francis Hospital and the VP of Medical Informatics for Catholic Health Services. He has held positions as the Director of Echocardiography at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI, and as the Associate Professor of Medicine at Brown University. He is a leading expert in echocardiography and digital imaging in cardiology and is the author of numerous publications in the field of echocardiography. He is also Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His main interests include medical informatics, valvular heart disease, echocardiography, digital imaging, and cardiac CT.

Elana Koss, M.D. , is an echocardiologist at St. Francis Hospital and is board certified in cardiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine. Dennis Mihalatos, M.D. , has been at St. Francis Hospital for 17 years and is currently the Director of Cardiovascular Echocardiography. Dr. Mihalatos has written numerous manuscripts and abstracts in this area and is currently working on several research projects as well. George Petrossian, M.D. , has been at St. Francis Hospital for 20 years and is the Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures. He received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and then completed a residency in internal medicine and cardiology at Presbyterian Hospital NY, followed by his interventional cardiology training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Petrossian is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, echocardiography, vascular medicine, and endovascular medicine. He is consistently recognized by Castle Connolly as one of the “Best Doctors” in America and has developed an expertise in coronary intervention, carotid stenting, peripheral vascular disease, and trans-catheter aortic valve implantation. Dr. Petrossian has been involved in numerous clinical research trials and was the first physician on Long Island to perform carotid stenting and trans-catheter aortic valve implantation. He is part of a team of physicians at St. Francis Hospital who are beginning a clinical trial in trans-catheter mitral valve replacement.

Nathaniel Reichek, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.H.A. , directed and expanded the departments of both Research and Cardiac Imaging at St. Francis Hospital from 2001 to 2016. He continues to lead multiple research projects at St. Francis’s principal investigator and also serves as Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Reichek has long been recognized as a pioneer in research in echocardiography and in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, is a founder and past president of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, a past chairman of the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories, was founding chairman of the Council of Cardiovascular Organizations and has served the American College of Cardiology in numerous roles. He has chaired peer review activities for the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology and has served on the editorial boards of all of the major U.S. Cardiology Journals. Dr. Reichek has published over 170 original research reports and over 400 abstracts, mainly in the field of cardiac imaging. His trainees include a number of leading investigators and teachers in echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

One of the nation's leading cardiac surgeons and an expert in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Newell Robinson, M.D. , was appointed Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in 2008 at St. Francis Hospital. In 2012, he was appointed Chairman of Cardiovascular Services for the Catholic Health Services system and has served as an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Francis Hospital for over 28 years. Dr. Robinson has been recognized frequently for his contributions to cardiothoracic surgery, including being listed as one of the “Best Doctors” in New York Magazine, as well as one of America’s Top Surgeons and NY Metro Top Doctors. Throughout the many leadership roles he has held, including president of the medical staff, surgeon, developer of minimally invasive cardiac procedures, director of seminal studies in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), and a pioneer researcher in transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacement, he has fostered a culture of research and clinical excellence, with unprecedented collaborations, notably between cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology.
As an authority and published author of the study of minimally invasive heart surgeries, Dr. Robinson is also a co-principal investigator for the multicenter Medtronic CoreValve Pivotal aortic transcatheter valve trial, focused on the treatment of patients who are at high risk or not suitable for open-heart aortic valve replacement surgery. He has recently co-published landmark articles regarding the utility of transcatheter valve therapy in New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Andrew Van Tosh, M.D., F.A.C.C. , is the Clinical Director of Nuclear Cardiology at St. Francis Hospital. He began his work at St. Francis in 2007, after having served as Physician-in-charge, Cardiovascular Stress Testing, at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. Dr. Van Tosh has extensive experience and expertise in cardiac PET as well as standard SPECT and radionuclide ventriculography techniques. He has also played a leading role in the New York State Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Van Tosh has written more than 20 publications and over 25 abstracts.

Timothy Vittorio, M.D. is Clinical Director of Research at St. Francis Hospital’s Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics (CACT) Program. He brings immense expertise in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support devices, and transplant cardiology. His research has focused on exercise physiology, hemodynamics and neurohumoral biology.
